WHY IS COACHING A GOOD IDEA?

Scientific studies show that coaching is a great investment. It increases life satisfaction and professional success and improves relationships.

The Journal of Positive Psychology found that coaching has positive effects on the outcomes of performance/skills, well-being, coping, work attitudes and goal-directed self-regulation.

Also, ongoing coaching is more effective than a one-time intervention. A study showed that while group training with managers increased their productivity by 22%, including a one-on-one, eight-week coaching session for the managers pushed up productivity by 88%.

Q. What was going on in your life before working with me? A. Although I attend networking events on an occasional basis, I was usually too reserved to go up to people to talk – hence I usually relied on being introduced to others or talking only to people that I was familiar with. Q. What brought you to book a coaching session(s)? A. I wanted to make some changes in the way that I handled social situations so I would be better equipped in future. Also, I was hoping to gain some tips on how to improve my networking skills so that I could become better at it. Q. How was your experience during the coachingsession(s)? A. It was great! Liz is really friendly and easy to talk to, and she was able to pick up on certain points that I hadn’t noticed before to help me find ways to improve. Her listening skills and attentiveness during the sessions were also very encouraging as I was able to open up and speak candidly about what was happening and what methods I was using to deal with them. Beyond what I had signed up to do, Liz was also really helpful in speaking with me about other areas in my life that I could work on – offering encouragement and identifying methods to help resolve those issues. Q. What benefits did you gain from the coaching session(s)? A. I’ve become more confident during networking sessions to approach people I’m unfamiliar with, and also learned how to talk in a group of people. On top of that, I’ve also been working on other issues I’ve been facing at work and collaborating with my colleagues to find resolutions together. Q. Would you recommend the coaching session(s)to others? A. Yes! If you feel that you’re willing to put in the work, and also have the resolve to achieve something at the end of it.

Dealing with Difficult Situations and People at Work

In a perfect world, tough situations would never drag people down – especially in a place of business. Unfortunately, we all know this is not the case. Rough times can affect a person’s mood and morale, which is particularly problematic for their work life. Many people find themselves dealing with difficult situations and people at work every year. Whether it’s a cluster of circumstances or a particular team member who is causing the stress, no one has to go through these issues alone.

Coaches can help a person discover strategies and tools to handle difficult situations and people effectively. Having the right approach to these troubling instances is key for maintaining confidence, peace of mind, and other characteristics which are important, both personally and professionally.

Coaches will work to understand the situation, discovering the root causes of the problem as well as the external and internal resources available to stop it. Sometimes, dealing with a situation alone is hard because stress and anxiety can stop a person from thinking clearly. Clear-minded coaches with an outsider’s perspective can apply their expert knowledge of counseling and mediation, effectively serving as a voice of reason in even the tensest situations.

The coach will help brainstorm strategies for helping a person correct their situation and/or learn how to be less affected by it. Getting help from a professional allows a person to conquer their situation, rather than feeling like it has conquered them.
