WHY IS COACHING A GOOD IDEA?

Scientific studies show that coaching is a great investment. It increases life satisfaction and professional success and improves relationships.

The Journal of Positive Psychology found that coaching has positive effects on the outcomes of performance/skills, well-being, coping, work attitudes and goal-directed self-regulation.

Also, ongoing coaching is more effective than a one-time intervention. A study showed that while group training with managers increased their productivity by 22%, including a one-on-one, eight-week coaching session for the managers pushed up productivity by 88%.

Zanetta Siciliano began coaching me for interviews...I was nervous, my voice wavered and I had no confidence. Zanetta was patient [and] encouraging, and convinced she could handle this "project." Initially, we spoke via phone about interview questions and my responses. She also helped me draft a 30-60-90 day management plan. She asked the perfect questions and simply listened to my responses. She provided constructive criticism, insisted that I tape my answers and rehearse them in the mirror. We made some progress but "this project" needed intensive help... We began practicing via video conferencing. She taped the sessions and insisted that I look at them. Before Zanetta's sessions, "this project" hated her voice and hated looking at pictures/videos of herself even more. My homework assignments required me to watch our sessions. While practicing for one spring interview Zanetta [advised me to] pretend there was a room full of people [even though] I told her there would be [only] 4/5 people in this interview. There were so many people (15/18) in the panel interview that I lost count. Somehow she knew that panel [would] consist of a room full of people. Because Zanetta knew how to calm my nerves and build my confidence, my voice no longer waivers and I tell my story with confidence. I landed a great job... I am forever thankful to Zanetta and would recommend her to anyone!

Mitch has given me the confidence to put myself first, and my performance at work has been better because of it. Managing my work-life balance has allowed me to focus on what’s important to me, have “me time” again, and I am better at what I do because of it. I used to get anxious about my emails all day – now I barely worry about them because of what Mitch taught me. Now I am better able to prioritize at work and at home, leaving me with less stress at the end of the day.

Speaking Effectively in Group Settings

Speaking skills are vital for all areas of life. But speaking in a group can sometimes present new challenges that catch us off guard.

Group settings like family gatherings and business meetings may require us to hone our skills at speaking to more than one person. This can require practice and preparation, and it’s something many people struggle with.

Speaking effectively in group settings requires us to have confidence in our verbal skills, but this isn’t always easy. Some people are very private, so group settings aren’t their preferred environment. Others aren’t confident in their speaking skills due to a lack of practice or even previous struggles in this area.

Professional coaches can be helpful when we’re looking to gain the ability to speak effectively in a group. Whether we’re trying to communicate an idea to our entire family or our whole work team, there are steps that can be taken to make things easier.

Understanding the differences between speaking to an individual and speaking to a group is the first step. Keeping things clear and concise is important, as is ensuring our message gets across.

Coaches can help us gain the talent and confidence necessary to handle speaking in any group setting.
