Family coaching is the process of clarifying what you want out of your current family relationships, and devising a plan on how to get from the current situation to the new place you want to be in. You can have amazing relationships with your spouse, children, parents and siblings, and a coach can help you with this goal.
People who use family coaching fall into several groups: people who want to improve their relationship with a particular family member, people who feel that their family relationships could could be better but don’t know exactly what they want, and people who just feel uneasy around their family but are not sure what to do about it.
Whatever your family situation is, a professional life coach can help you with all stages of improving your relationships.
First, they can help you examine what it is you want to change about your family relationships, and more importantly, why you want that. Many times we desire two conflicting things, and through the process of clarifying which of the two is more important to us, we can gain very important insights about our priorities and about the optimal course of action to take. A family coach can also uncover different beliefs you are holding that have been preventing you from improving the relationship with your family.
Then, they can help you figure out a plan that will advance you towards your goals. A good plan has measurable milestones that are gradually advancing you towards your goal. If the milestones are too hard to achieve, you are likely to get discouraged. If the milestones are too easy, they will not advance you enough towards your goal, which will reduce your motivation to stick to them. Also, a good plan is custom tailored to you. Maybe you need to add more helpful behaviors such as listening attentively, or reduce the frequency of unhelpful ones such as escalating situations that are already hard. Maybe you need to increase activities that make you feel good around your family, or eliminate activities that have resulted in conflicts in the past. Whatever the plan you agree on, it will be a function of what has worked for you in the past and what hasn’t.
Finally, a good family coach will hold you accountable and give you a platform to report on your progress. This is proven to make you more successful at actually sticking to the plan and improving the relationships with your family. You are less likely to engage in behaviors that are not helpful if you know that someone will ask you about your progress. Your coach will also be there for you any time you encounter difficulties. They have probably helped others reach the same goals, and know how to deal with any difficulty that may arise along the way.
