WHY IS COACHING A GOOD IDEA?

Scientific studies show that coaching is a great investment. It increases life satisfaction and professional success and improves relationships.

The Journal of Positive Psychology found that coaching has positive effects on the outcomes of performance/skills, well-being, coping, work attitudes and goal-directed self-regulation.

Also, ongoing coaching is more effective than a one-time intervention. A study showed that while group training with managers increased their productivity by 22%, including a one-on-one, eight-week coaching session for the managers pushed up productivity by 88%.

I couldn't complete a diet to save my life before working with Karolina! I tried every diet under the sun and no matter what after a few days I'd have a bad day at work or have a strong craving and bam that was the end of that diet. Karolina listened to my concerns and created a tailored program not only for my goal, but with my weaknesses, and struggles in mind. She knew that I wouldn't be an easy client so she made sure to talk to me EVERYDAY for the first couple of weeks. If I slipped up she didn't make me feel ashamed or guilty. Instead, so walked through my day with me and told me where my triggers were happening that were causing me to cave into my cravings. She then worked with me to find ways of avoiding those triggers. Not all could be avoided (I had a couple of really rough days at work), but in those instances she worked through the frustrations I had and taught me how to cope in those moments since they were unavoidable. I'm proud to say I completed the Whole 30 diet and it feels amazing! Karolina was really there for me when I needed her and like a parent teach their kid to ride a bike, she slowly let go as I started to feel more in control and comfortable handling it on my own.

“I started seeing Dawn as both a mentor and for fitness. I had gone to my doctor for having an extremely high heart rate while my blood pressure was sky rocketing from stress. It was interrupting the activities of my daily living and I needed help. I was worried, stressed and had PTSD. My doctor prescribed low dose medications for a minimum of 6 months that would make me feel a bit numb for the time being and would help temporarily. She also said to seek counseling and exercise as a medication will only help physically. I needed to gain control mentally. My daughter was also having problems. She is 10 and was having breakouts of cold sores from stress. My doctor told me to teach her stress management which wasn’t something I knew how to do for myself. I took a mindfulness workshop with Dawn on calming techniques and awareness. In the class I learned that our brains can go into fight or flight from our thoughts and can’t tell the difference between an actual threat and threatening memories. It’s basically like a computer. What you type in, is what the screen will show you. I learned that deep breathing can help kick your body out of fight or flight and go back to normal. And with each breath to say positive words. I learned that a lot of depression stems from thinking about the past and anxiety is worrying about the future. This developed in me as a secondary form of PTSD while married to my ex-husband. He was a soldier who went through two very difficult deployments that took its toll. While on one of those deployments he called me from Iraq. It was April 29th of 2009 here, almost April 30th in Iraq with the time difference. The call I received changed my world. I was terrified from the conversation he might hurt himself, us, or someone else. I contacted his sergeant and asked for him to be put on a suicide watch. He was angry, wrote back the 29th of April that having his command sergeant say he was suicidal was comical, and he would be filing for a divorce when he came home. That was 6 years ago and for 6 years I have battled my own mind every day. I developed PTSD the same as he had. April 29th of this year, even with medications I couldn’t get my heart rate down. My heart was beating at 131 beats per minute for absolutely no reason. When your heart jumps over 100 beats per minute, you don’t think clear. Fingers, toes and forehead will tingle because your blood is going to your major organs preparing for a fight or a flight. Sometimes you can even pass out which is just your body rebooting. I was at my mom’s that night and at 31 years old, I crawled in her lap crying that I couldn’t calm down. She prayed for me and that night I decided it would be good to go to yoga with Dawn the following day. April 30th while in yoga with Dawn, I successfully was able to pose and override the pain, and focus on my breathing. I was finally calm again. It was needed and I felt some control again. I thanked her for the class and went to Storvick Park to watch my son play soccer. When I got to the field I saw I missed several calls from my ex-husband’s family. When I got ahold of my sister in law, I received the worst news of my life. My hands and feet went numb, my head felt disconnected and I knew I was going into psychogenic shock. I wasn’t breathing, I couldn’t. I dropped the phone and put myself in a tripod position taking deep breaths to gain control from the tools I had learned in class. All I could say to my sister in law was, “How am I going to tell my daughter? How could he leave me to tell her that?” On April 30th of 2015, the father of my child, the man who was my husband at one time and my childhood friend died by a gunshot wound to the head. He died by suicide from battling PTSD for years. The day before he died, April 29th, he went to the VA for help with his medications. They weren’t helping, the same as mine weren’t the day before. You know I don’t think he wanted to die that day, he just couldn’t live with the pain anymore. Many people battle mental problems. Bones break, bladders get infections, any stress on your body that outweighs your resources will cause a problem. Your brain is no different and is just as susceptible as any other organ in your body. There are medications that help but learning to retrain yourself, love yourself, control your feelings and thoughts and be present is a tool I learned in class through Dawn. It’s a wonderful program and this is my testimony to her business. Thank you Dawn. You’re a great teacher.”

If you want to instill some grit into your life, if you want to stop procrastinating, if you want to learn how set realistic goals that compound overtime into something beyond your wildest dreams, then SEAN IS YOUR COACH! I came to see Sean when I was very overweight, unemployed, smoking way too much pot and had no prospects of a relationship. I was very embarrassed of my situation, but Sean didn't seem fazed by any of it. Instead he told me how he saw a man who was afraid of what he could be... I started to cry, because it's true. I could never live up to my older brother's success. Yet I was too afraid of failure to even try so why not just do nothing. Sean broke down a 6 month time line of what he calls , "manageable micro-routines." At first I thought, how the hell is waking up and screaming YES! at the top of my lungs (into the pillow, because of my room mate) going to help me start my day? I did it begrudgingly and then followed his simple mourning routine of ten pushups while listening to my favorite energetic song (at first I could only do three pushups)after this I had to do, a two minute meditation and half a page of free writing. I won't lie, it all seemed very trivial and silly and I didn't see the point of any of it. Then... After 30 days of doing that along with some other "manageable micro-routines" that Sean slowly incorporated throughout the week (rather innocuously I might add) I began to loose weight, which in turn made me not want to eat as much, which then turned into being more productive. It seemed as if big changes were happening without me even trying! There were times were I wanted to be done with all or just give myself a little midnight reward, Sean told me to call him when I felt like that so I did. Sean is always available. I called him at 2am once and he picked up! This man doesn't sleep, I thought to myself as he talked me off the ledge of wanting to smoke a bong rip and eat some cookie dough. I was depressed because I had gotten back into the darting scene and some of my old stories about myself were beginning to pop up. But, Sean was able to help me re-write those and I went to sleep that night without smoking weed or stuffing my face with cookie dough.... hmmmm cook-ie-dough :) I have been working with Sean for two years now and I have lost 135lbs, I have a beautiful partner, a great job and a schedule that makes me happy! Most importantly Sean has showed me how work through the tough days, how to deal with it Stoically and not completely toss the baby out with the bath water. Thank you Sean!

What Is Weight-Loss Coaching & How Can It Help Me?

Weight loss coaching is the process of understanding what you need to do in order to lose weight, figuring out what has been preventing you from losing weight, and generating a concrete playbook that will help you get from your current situation to the new place you want to be in.

People who use weight loss coaching know that they want to lose some weight but don’t know exactly what is the best way to make it happen. Whatever your situation is, a professional weight loss coach can help you with all stages of the process of losing weight.

First, they can help you examine what are the reasons you haven’t been able to lose this weight in the past. Many times we want two conflicting things, and through the process of clarifying which of the two is more important to us, we can gain very important insights about our priorities. A coach can also uncover different beliefs you are holding that have been preventing you from taking the action you have been wanting to take all this time.

Then, they can help you figure out a concrete plan that will advance you towards your perfect weight. A good plan has measurable milestones that are gradually advancing you towards your goal. If the milestones are too hard to achieve, you are likely to get discouraged. If the milestones are too easy, they will not advance you enough towards your goal, which will reduce your motivation to stick to them. Also, a good plan is custom tailored to you. Maybe you need to add more healthy foods, or remove unhealthy ones, reduce portion sizes or increase meal frequency. Whatever it ends up being, the plan will be a function of what has worked for you in the past and what hasn't.

Finally, a good coach will hold you accountable and give you a platform to report on your progress. This is proven to make you more successful at actually sticking to the plan. You are less likely to engage in behaviors that are not helpful if you know that someone will ask you about your progress. Your coach will also be there for you any time you encounter difficulties. They have probably helped others reach the same goals, and know how to deal with any difficulty that may arise along the way.

Scientific studies have shown that coaching is an effective way to lose weight. Researchers from The Miriam Hospital’s Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center in Providence, R.I found that participants working with a health coach lost more than 9 percent of their body weight during a 24-week period.
