The Journal of Positive Psychology found that coaching has positive effects on the outcomes of performance/skills, well-being, coping, work attitudes and goal-directed self-regulation.

Also, ongoing coaching is more effective than a one-time intervention. A study showed that while group training with managers increased their productivity by 22%, including a one-on-one, eight-week coaching session for the managers pushed up productivity by 88%.

In December 2012, I got into a really bad car accident that, even after surgery and physical therapy, left me with chronic pain PLUS I gained a lot of weight due to my lack of mobility and emotional eating. I knew the weight was amplifying my pain and I've always been an active, fit person but I just couldn't find the motivation to get back into shape on my own, so I started working with Diantha in 2015. I was a big believer in "go big or go home," so my initial goal to get back into shape was to start going to the gym 1 hour a day, 5 days per week. Diantha was sweet and gently suggested that such a massive change all at once might be difficult to maintain but I was insistent. When I was younger, I had no problem setting and achieving big goals like this but my body had changed a lot since then and I hadn't worked out since my accident. Needless to say, when I met with Diantha the following week, I had only gone to the gym once for about 20 minutes and it was horrible. I felt completely defeated and was losing hope that I could change but Diantha didn't miss a beat. She was very comforting and told me that I could absolutely still reach my goal but I needed to start where I was at and develop a clear plan. It was difficult for me to accept that I was so out of shape but once I did, the path to my goal became so much clearer. So I modified my goal and decided that working out 5 days a week would be my long-term goal, and my first step to reaching that goal was to start walking at the same time every day for 5 minutes. I know this seems like such an easy goal but the first week I successfully completed it, I felt like I had achieved something and that felt great. Each week after, Diantha would help me build on that habit. Fast forward a year and a half and not only am I working out 5 days a week, I have lost 110lbs, experience minimal pain on a regular basis, and I am currently training for my first marathon. Diantha has been an incredible influence on my life and I can't recommend her highly enough.

What Is Weight-Loss Coaching & How Can It Help Me?

Weight loss coaching is the process of understanding what you need to do in order to lose weight, figuring out what has been preventing you from losing weight, and generating a concrete playbook that will help you get from your current situation to the new place you want to be in.

People who use weight loss coaching know that they want to lose some weight but don’t know exactly what is the best way to make it happen. Whatever your situation is, a professional weight loss coach can help you with all stages of the process of losing weight.

First, they can help you examine what are the reasons you haven’t been able to lose this weight in the past. Many times we want two conflicting things, and through the process of clarifying which of the two is more important to us, we can gain very important insights about our priorities. A coach can also uncover different beliefs you are holding that have been preventing you from taking the action you have been wanting to take all this time.

Then, they can help you figure out a concrete plan that will advance you towards your perfect weight. A good plan has measurable milestones that are gradually advancing you towards your goal. If the milestones are too hard to achieve, you are likely to get discouraged. If the milestones are too easy, they will not advance you enough towards your goal, which will reduce your motivation to stick to them. Also, a good plan is custom tailored to you. Maybe you need to add more healthy foods, or remove unhealthy ones, reduce portion sizes or increase meal frequency. Whatever it ends up being, the plan will be a function of what has worked for you in the past and what hasn't.

Finally, a good coach will hold you accountable and give you a platform to report on your progress. This is proven to make you more successful at actually sticking to the plan. You are less likely to engage in behaviors that are not helpful if you know that someone will ask you about your progress. Your coach will also be there for you any time you encounter difficulties. They have probably helped others reach the same goals, and know how to deal with any difficulty that may arise along the way.

Scientific studies have shown that coaching is an effective way to lose weight. Researchers from The Miriam Hospital’s Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center in Providence, R.I found that participants working with a health coach lost more than 9 percent of their body weight during a 24-week period.
